With the war with #Signal that's slowly beginning to rear its head, you probably shouldn't devote yourself to it. Signal is great, but it is centralized, it's a single company, and if that company goes down, that's it — and then you have to build your contact network all over again. With how hard it is to move from platform to platform, I still strongly recommend using #Matrix instead, specifically because it's decentralized. Every government in the world could declare it a national threat, and it still will never go away, just like fedi or the dark web, or the internet itself.

Furthermore, the Matrix.org Foundation itself knows nothing at all about you, and your server only knows what you put into it when you sign up (which some servers, like mine, require nothing at all). Signal, meanwhile, knows your phone number (which is itself owned by phone companies and therefore not actually remotely secure, and it's only a matter of time before they're required to turn on users).

Matrix also has bridges to other platforms that you can use to interact with those in your network who aren't ready to switch away from other services, and hopefully to help bring them in.

Matrix is good and all but name a single matrix client that doesn't suck or a matrix server or a matrix bridge (that doesn't suck). I prefer Simplex chat which isn't perfect either but I live with it

Element is fine. A lot of improvements were made to it in the last years. My server is just fine (and it's easy to set up your own if you want) and I use a lot of bridges that also work perfectly fine.

Element desktop is one of the buggiest, hard to use software I have installed. It's really unfortunate

How long ago? I started using it a couple years ago. It was borderline unusable then, but there's very few noticeable issues these days.

Well just last week it crashed when I tried screen sharing. And calls from element desktop to element x (android) aren't supported either

Those are both on account of the same overarching issue, being the protocol is just now branching out into native conference calling. At the moment, it's probably best to stick with the Jitsi addon. The only alternative out there is Discord, so it's something you'll have to be patient with. There isn't much point in using Element X right now, just use Element.

I started trying out xmpp today and I gotta say the experience was much nicer so far than on matrix
